THE COMMUNITY
Albuquerque is a city of 700,000 located on the banks of the Rio Grande at the foot of the Sandia Mountains (elevation 10,678’). Victory Christian School is located one mile from the Rio Grande River in the North Valley of Albuquerque in The Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. The city is bordered on the north by the Sandia Indian Pueblo and on the south by the Isleta Indian Pueblo. The state’s multicultural population includes Native American, Hispanic, African-American, Asian, and Anglo groups. The city of Albuquerque is the seat of the University of New Mexico, the home of Sandia National Laboratories and Kirtland Air Force Base, and the site of considerable “high tech” research and development.
THE SCHOOL
Victory Christian School was founded in 1981 as a church-sponsored non-denominational, co-educational school. Victory’s current enrollment is 183 students in grades kindergarten through twelfth (fifty-two students in grades nine through twelve). Victory exists for the purpose of helping Christian families train their students to be servants for the Lord. The school is funded through support of the sponsoring church, tuition, fees, and gifts from the school’s benefactors and supporters. Most students come from within a twenty-five mile radius of the school. The school moved into a new facility in 1994 that consists of twelve new classrooms including a full science laboratory, computer laboratory, and secondary classes computer network. The school still uses part of the sponsoring church facilities for three classrooms, a music wing with three music classrooms, a library, a 300 seat auditorium, and a lunchroom.
Students come from a wide variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and evangelical Christian families creating an interdenominational school family. Victory has a selective admission process that seeks an average to above average, highly motivated, and diverse student body that has a desire for Christian training and for success in a college preparatory curriculum. Forty-four percent of the 2006-2007 student body comes from a minority background, and fifty-six percent are female. Approximately seven percent of the student body receives financial aid. Financial aid is based entirely on demonstrated financial need.
Twenty-nine percent of the school faculty has an advanced degree of at least a masters, and forty percent of the secondary faculty has an advanced degree.
THE CURRICULUM
Students in grades 9-12 are required to take a minimum of 25 courses for graduation, including a year of theology for every year they attend Victory, four in English, three in math (through Algebra II/Trigonometry), three in laboratory science, three in history (one in United States History and one semester of government), two in foreign language, and six in fine arts/practical arts/physical education. Victory offers a third year of foreign language, senior calculus, senior economics, and senior physics. Victory Christian School maintains a rigorous college preparatory program. Victory does not offer honors-level classes because of the size of the school.
ACCREDITATION AND AFFILIATION
Victory is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International and is accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International, the New Mexico State Department of Education and the North Central Association.
